Estonia's Enefit completes one wind project, starts another
Sep 06, 2024 10:27 CESTNorway-based Deep Wind Offshore AS has secured the exclusive rights to develop another offshore wind park in the Estonian portion of the Baltic Sea less than ten days after winning its first site off Saaremaa Island.
Estonia’s Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority (CPTRA) announced this on Friday soon after the auction for the Saare 2.2 marine area was concluded. It said in a statement that the Norwegian firm made the only offer and thus won the bidding process at the starting price of EUR 1.33 million (USD 1.4m).
According to its building permit application, Deep Wind Offshore intends to install as many as 56 wind turbines with a total capacity of up to 840 MW in the Saare 2.2 area, which spans 88.5 sq km. This is in addition to the 98 machines it plans to install in the 163.8-sq-km Saare 2.1 area. Together, these units could add up to 2,400 MW of offshore wind power generation capacity for Estonia.
In a separate statement, Deep Wind Offshore said that this second award is expected to establish Estonia as one of the company’s core markets. It has pledged to develop over 10 GW of offshore wind within 10 years.
“We are pleased to expand our area for exclusive development. We look forward to the discussions with the Estonian Authorities about how this project can contribute to the country reaching its climate goals, enhance energy security, build value chains, and create local jobs,” said CEO Knut Vassbotn.
As previously reported, there is one more area up for grabs in Estonia – Saare 3. The auction for it is scheduled to take place from July 2 until July 4, 2024.
