Santa Sweets installs 2-MW solar facility in New Jersey

(ADPnews) - Oct 14, 2010 - US tomato grower Santa Sweets said Tuesday it had installed a 2-MW solar system at its facility in Cedarville, New Jersey, seeking to scale down carbon dioxide emissions.

The solar plant covers 10 acres (4 hectares) and includes more than 11,000 solar photovoltaic (PV) panels. It will generate enough power to cover the needs of Santa Sweets' 200,000 sq ft (18,600 sq m) of cooling and production space, while any unused power will go towards the utility grid. In addition, the solar system will save 86,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide, 380 tonnes of sulfur dioxide and more than 120 tonnes of nitrogen oxide emissions.

Santa Sweets said it planned to construct similar systems at other company packing units, an initiative which comes in line with its sustainability and social responsibility programme.
