Saris Brewery, part of Asahi Europe & International, has agreed to procure the entire output of a new 6.3-MWp solar farm to be built in eastern Slovakia by Vienna-based renewable energy company Enery.

The parties have signed a 10-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA), the first of its kind ever signed in Slovakia, according to a recent statement.

The solar farm will be located in the village of Iliasovce. It will be equipped with 10,582 modules, spanning 8.8 hectares. The facility is expected to be constructed in the next six months.

With this agreement, the Velky Saris-based unit of Czech group Plzensky Prazdroj expects to meet its electricity needs entirely through renewable sources as of 2025.

The Iliasovce plant alone will cover about 92% of the brewery’s power demand, which is about 7.2 GWh per year. About 6% will be covered by the company’s own solar plant, while the remainder will be supplied from sources with certificates of origin. There is, however, a plan to replace these in cooperation with Enery.

“Plzensky Prazdroj will become the first company in Slovakia to support the construction of a local solar power plant via long-term commitment,” said Martin Grygarik, sales director at Plzensky Prazdroj Slovensko.
