South African chemicals and energy company Sasol Ltd (JSE:SOL) and France-based industrial gas supplier Air Liquide (EPA:AI) have signed a deal to offtake 97.5 MW of renewable power from a solar park that Mainstream Renewable Power will build in South Africa.

Under the power purchase agreement (PPA), Mainstream will set up a local company to build a solar farm located in the Free State province. The site is expected to go live in 2025.

The contract with Mainstream marks the third PPA agreed by the two companies to secure renewable electricity for Sasol’s Secunda site where Air Liquide operates an oxygen production site touted as the largest of this type in the world.

The two companies have so far contracted about 580 MW of renewable power for the Secunda site, including the deals sealed with Enel Green Power (EGP) and with TotalEnergies SE and its partner Mulilo.

The three PPAs will advance Air Liquide’s strategy to cut carbon dioxide emissions at the Secunda site by 30% to 40% by 2031, the French firm noted in the press release published today.
