The 600-MW Al Shuaibah 1 solar photovoltaic (PV) project has launched commercial operation, co-owner developer ACWA Power Co (TADAWUL:2082) said on Wednesday.

In a stock market filing, the Riyadh-based company said it had received the Commercial Operation Certificate from the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) for the full production capacity of the plant.

Al Shuaibah 1 is one of two solar energy plants located about 80 km (49.71 mi) south of the city of Jeddah, in Makkah Province. The second one is Al Shuaibah 2 with a capacity of 2,060 MWac.

The electricity from both plants will be procured by SPPC under a 35-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

The two projects are being developed by the Shuaibah Holding Company (SHC) in which ACWA Power holds a 35.01% stake.

In its third-quarter report, ACWA Power said that the two projects are worth SAR 8.25 billion (USD 2.2bn/EUR 2.08bn) in investments. Both should be in commercial operation by the end of 2025, according to the report.
