Polish perovskite solar cell developer Saule Technologies on Friday said its cells have achieved 25.5% efficiency under indoor light, or the operating conditions for Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

The efficiency was confirmed by laboratory measurements at the Fraunhofer ISE group carried out under 1000 lux illumination by a cold white LED.

The Wroclaw, Poland-based company says its flexible perovskite photovoltaic (PV) devices are suitable for various IoT applications as they can power electronic devices in the indoor, low-light intensity conditions.

In May, Saule Technologies opened a perovskite PV cells factory with a pilot line targeted at the IoT sector.

“Our first factory already prints perovskite devices suitable for the IoT sector,” said co-founder and chief technology officer Olga Malinkiewicz. “Now, when we have successfully entered the commercialization phase, we are going to scale up our business,” she added, citing expectations that the IoT market will be worth USD 1.1 trillion (EUR 950bn) in 2025.

Other potential applications for Saule Technologies’ cells include the building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV), building attached photovoltaics (BAPV) and e-mobility sectors.
