Japanese renewable energy firm SB Energy Corp said today it has switched on its 50-MW wind farm located in Mongolai's Gobi desert.

The Tsetsii Wind Farm, as it is named, was developed in partnership with Mongolian clean technology and infrastructure investor Newcom LLC, through the joint venture Clean Energy Asia LLC that was established in 2012.

Comprised of 25 wind turbines, the plant commenced operations three months ahead of schedule and is expected to generate around 200 million kWh per year.

Tsetsii was funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It is also the first power generation business in Mongolia for the clean energy arm of SoftBank Corp (TYO:9984).

Currently, the country is aiming to increase its renewable energy generation share to 20% by 2020 and to 30% by 2030, SB Energy noted.
