March 4 (Renewables Now) = A solar photovoltaic (PV) farm that was recently inaugurated at a compound of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in Juba was constructed by Norway's Scatec Solar ASA (OSL:SSO).

Scatec Solar, working under a contract with UNMISS, installed a 1-MW PV array and hybridised the system with existing diesel generators, the company said in today’s statement. Kenyan renewables installer Harmonic Systems Ltd was hired as a subcontractor for the project.

Until now, the UN House compound in Juba relied on five diesel generators, while the hybrid system uses only two, saving some 3,000 litres of fossil fuel per day. The PV component can generate around 60% of the electricity consumed on the base.

The UN peacekeeping mission said the new solar farm can meet the power needs of nine office buildings and the accommodation units of all the military staff at the base.

The Norwegian company's next assignment in South Sudan is the construction of a 1.25-MW PV-diesel hybrid system at the UNMISS compound in Wau. The project is due to be finalised in the second quarter of 2020.

Scatec Solar will provide maintenance services for the hybrid systems at both sites.
