Scottish govt to grant GBP 1.8m to renewable energy programme in Malawi

Feb 13, 2012 - The government of Scotland on Sunday said it would grant some GBP 1.8 million (USD 2.8m/EUR 2.1m) for a programme to promote renewable energy development and enable the access to reliable electricity in rural areas of Malawi.

Strathclyde University will lead the Malawi Renewable Energy Acceleration programme and will receive the Scottish government's funding over three years.

The programme will help disadvantaged communities meet their energy needs through developing own green energy projects. The university will provide research technology, cooperation, educational and training support and entrepreneurship. The programme also envisages institutional support to develop policies for renewable and community energy projects in Malawi.

The programme follows a Community Electrification and Development project between Scotland and Malawi, led by Strathclyde University, which resulted in the installation of seven solar energy systems at schools and health posts and systems at teacher homes.
