Swedish floating wind turbine developer SeaTwirl AB (STO:STW) will collaborate with UK oil and gas operator Serica Energy Plc (LON:SQZ) to look at the feasibility of electrifying offshore oil and gas assets with SeaTwirl's floating wind turbine.

The companies announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday.

Serica said it will provide SeaTwirl’s team with real data from its Bruce asset to help the Swedish company optimise its design and engineering and ensure its floating wind technology is suited for the intended purpose.

"We are truly excited to enter into this MoU with such a strong and innovative oil & gas operator as Serica Energy, who operates multiple assets in the North Sea and who has a solid reputation around innovation and decarbonisation of their operations,” commented SeaTwirl chief executive Johan Sandberg.

SeaTwirl is developing vertical-axis wind turbine technology. The company installed its first prototype in the sea in 2015.
