Second E15 retail station opens in Iowa

Jan 3, 2013 - A second fuel retailer in the state of Iowa has started offering E15 blend of ethanol and gasoline to the owners of cars produced after 2001, the Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) said Wednesday.

The Fredericksburg Coop in northeast Iowa, on Highway 18 West, became the second filling station in the state to receive an approval by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to start retail sales of E15 fuel.

E15 is a blend of gasoline and 15% ethanol and is suitable for use in passenger vehicles produced after 2001, or the vast majority of passenger cars in the US responsible for 85% of the country’s total fuel use.

The state of Iowa has 41 ethanol refineries with a combined capacity of some 3.7 billion gallons (14bn litres) of ethanol annually. It also features 12 biodiesel plants with a combined capacity of 315 million gallons a year.
