Sembcorp starts construction of 60-MWp floating PV farm in Singapore

Sembcorp Industries Ltd (SGX:U96) announced Tuesday the start of construction of a 60-MWp floating solar plant in Singapore, the output of which was recently contracted by the National Water Agency PUB.

Sembcorp Floating Solar Singapore, a unit of the Singaporean energy group, will design, build, own and operate a solar array composed of more than 146,000 double-glass photovoltaic (PV) panels on the Tengeh Reservoir in Tuas. PUB will be buying the electricity produced by the park under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

Full commercial operations at the site are planned to commence in 2021. When up and running, the floating PV plant will be producing enough power for PUB’s local water treatment plants, offsetting 7% of the agency’s annual electricity needs.

Singapore has limited space for onshore renewable energy projects, but PUB’s water bodies and reservoirs provide an alternative location for solar farms. The project on the Tengeh Reservoir will be one of the world’s largest inland floating solar systems, Sembcorp said.
