Sempra Infrastructure announced on Thursday it has reached a final investment decision (FID) on its 320-MW Cimarron cross-border wind project in Mexico that will be supplying green power to the City of Santa Clara in California.

The subsidiary of US energy company Sempra (NYSE:SRE) is building the USD-500-million (EUR 459.4m) wind farm as part of the Energía Sierra Juarez (ESJ) complex. Cimarron will be the third phase of the project that is set to have a total installed capacity of 582 MW.

To be installed in the municipality of Tecate of Baja California state, the Cimarron park will be equipped with 64 turbines by Denmark’s Vestas Wind Systems, an order for which was announced the manufacturer separately. The plant will be hooked to Sempra Infrastructure's existing cross-border, high-voltage transmission line. Its entire generation is contracted under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Silicon Valley Power.

Comarron’s commercial operations are due to be launched in late 2025, with its output expected to be equal to the demand of over 84,000 homes annually.

The ESJ complex’s first two wind farms, with a combined capacity of 263 MW, are run under long-term offtake deals with utility San Diego Gas & Electric. Sempra said it is requesting to interconnect a further 300 MW at the site.
