Serbia to auction at least 400 MW of wind, solar in 2024 round

Serbia will offer at least 400 MW of solar and wind power capacity in the renewable energy auction this year, energy and mining minister Dubravka Djedovic Hadnanovic has announced.

The 2024 bidding round will be the second auction under the three-year plan adopted last year, aimed at equipping Serbia with at least 1,300 MW of new renewables capacity through private investments.

“Through the first three-year [2023-2025] plan, we focused on large investments, because that is the only way we can expedite the energy transition process,” Djedovic Hadnanovic said.

Following legislative changes last year, the government will be looking for bank guarantees for grid connection. In the event the system cannot integrate all of the projects that have applied for connection, investors will have various options to provide additional capacity for balancing, such as battery storage, the minister said.

Serbia put up contracts for difference for 400 MW of wind and 50 MW of solar power in the first auction round. The wind quota was exceeded in the qualification phase, but the capacity was pruned down to 400 MW in the final ranking of bids. Bids for solar underwhelmed in the qualification phase and later in the final ranking.
