Serbia's Sunoko launches biogas plant in Vrbas

BELGRADE (Serbia), July 15 (SeeNews) – Serbian sugar producer Sunoko, part of diversified conglomerate MK Group, has launched a 9 million euro ($10.6 million) biogas power plant in Vrbas, northern Serbia, it said.

The plant has an electricity production capacity of 2.4 MW per hour, and will provide annual electricity needs for about 5,000 households, MK Group said in a statement posted on its website.

"Sunoko, as part of the MK Group, has decided to use waste raw materials and by-products from sugar beet to produce electricity. With such innovative projects, our group contributes to the protection of the environment, but also to more efficient and sustainable business," Sunoko technical director Zoran Stojak said.

The power plant uses a technological solution from German company Wabio Technologie, MK Group said.

The use of biogas improves the country’s energy balance by increasing the share of renewable energy sources in total production and contributes to achieving the goal of the Serbian government to increase the share of energy from renewable sources to at least 40% by 2040, the diversified holding noted.
