German fuel-cell specialist SFC Energy AG (ETR:F3C) and Austria-based Wolftank Group will supply a hydrogen emergency power system for the telecommunication equipment of TIM SpA (BIT:TIT) as the Italian telecommunications provider is seeking to switch to environmentally friendly energy solutions.

As part of cooperation agreed in March, the two partners will provide a system consisting of SFC Energy's hydrogen fuel cell technology and a special hydrogen tank by Wolftank that supplies the fuel cells. The hydrogen-based solution will be used for TIM's telecommunication equipment to replace existing grid backup systems powered by diesel generators.

An emission-free power generator has already been installed for TIM in the city of Trento, northern Italy, as part of a pilot project.

"Within a very short time, we have successfully implemented a first project. This is the basis to drive an upcoming nationwide replacement of conventional diesel gensets by market-proven hydrogen and fuel cell technologies," said SFC Energy's chief executive Peter Podesser.

The hydrogen-based power supply system can be used at gas utilities, telecom infrastructure and hydrogen refuelling stations, thus making emergency power supply climate neutral.
