Siemens Gamesa, the wind turbine business of Siemens Energy AG (ETR:ENR), plans 4,100 job reductions, representing some 15% of its workforce, according to an internal letter seen and reported by Reuters on Tuesday.

Adjustments going beyond organisational changes are needed to adapt to lower business volumes, reduced activity in non-core markets and a streamlined portfolio, Siemens Gamesa’s outgoing chief executive Jochen Eickholt says in the letter to staff, as cited by the news agency.

A Siemens Energy spokesperson told Reuters that the number of jobs affected would be announced after the company completes consultations with all stakeholders.

Eickholt has said further that the aim was to maintain a stable total workforce at Siemens Gamesa by reallocating positions and hiring additional employees in other parts of the business.

Earlier in May, Siemens Energy said it had initiated comprehensive measures for the operational restructuring of Siemens Gamesa, which would result in job adjustments. “On balance, however, the number of employees at Siemens Gamesa is expected to remain roughly constant over the next few years, as areas such as offshore are growing. The aim is to absorb as much of the planned staff reduction in the affected areas as possible through internal job transfers,” its statement then read.
