Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy SA (BME:SGRE) on Wednesday officially started construction works to expand its offshore wind turbine nacelle assembly factory in Taiwan, aiming to serve the growing domestic market and the Asia Pacific region.

The expansion plan for the facility at the port of Taichung will more than triple the site’s area, to reach up to 90,000 square metres (96,875 square feet), and add two new production halls and a new warehouse. The space will house dedicated production lines for hub assembly, nacelle backend assembly and final nacelle assembly, including generator-related work.

The expanded plant will provide equipment for the 1-GW Hai Long cluster in Taiwanese waters and for future projects that will be awarded in the country’s auctions for offshore wind power capacity, as well as for other schemes in the Asia Pacific. Siemens Gamesa will spend the next 15 months training its Taiwanese staff in Europe and plans to begin assembling SG 14-222 DD offshore turbine nacelles in the second quarter of 2024.

Currently, the Taichung plant is the largest base for offshore wind turbine nacelle assembly in Taiwan. It kicked off production in August last year.

“Having been present locally since our first offshore installation in 2016, followed by the opening of our Taipei office in 2017, we greatly appreciate the clear pipeline of projects and visibility of market plans which are available,” said Marc Becker, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s offshore business.
