Siemens gets 138 MW wind turbine order in South Africa

Nov 21, 2012 – German engineering group Siemens AG (ETR:SIE) said today it is entering the South African wind market as it had received an order to supply turbines for the 138 MW Jeffrey's Bay wind power plant.

Siemens will thus deliver a total of 60 wind turbines each with a capacity of 2.3 MW for the Jeffrey’s Bay power plant located in the Eastern Cape province.

The order was placed by a consortium consisting of Mainstream Renewable Power Ltd, its investment partner Globeleq, Thebe Investment Corporation and local engineering firms Enzani Technologies and Usizo Engineering.

The South African government has set a target to achieve 20,000 MW of newly-installed renewable energy capacity in the country by 2030.

Siemens also said that since July 2012 it had bagged a total of 16 orders for more than 270 onshore wind turbines from Europe and South Africa. The total capacity of these projects, the value of which is estimated at more than EUR 880 million (USD 1.1bn), stands at 730 MW.
