Siemens successfully tests hydrogen train in Bavaria

Siemens Mobility GmbH has successfully completed the first test runs on its Mireo Plus H hydrogen-powered train in the German state of Bavaria which is expected to start passenger service in mid-2024.

Mireo Plus H has two roof-mounted fuel cells and a lithium-ion battery that allows the train to run between 1,000 and 1,200 kilometres (745 miles) with one tank filling. The two-car trainset, which will service the route between Augsburg and Fuessen and Augsburg and Peissenberg, will be able to achieve a top speed of 160 km/h.

The first pilot operations of the train are planned for 30 months and are supported by the State of Bavaria. Siemens Mobility and Bavaria sealed the development partnership in 2021 shortly after Siemens started the construction of an 8.8-MW green hydrogen plant in the state.

“The results of these tests will then determine whether we decide to use hydrogen-powered trains on additional routes in Bavaria. Our goal is to end diesel operations in Bavaria’s local and regional rail passenger transport by 2040,” said Bavaria’s transport minister Christian Bernreiter.
