US solar-focused independent power producer Silicon Ranch said on Thursday its 58-MW Scotford solar farm near Edmonton in the Canadian province of Alberta has started commercial operation.

Described as the largest behind-the-metre solar project in Canada, the solar farm will supply Shell’s Energy and Chemicals Park, Scotford. The project will be capable of meeting some 20% of the refinery’s energy needs and providing 100% of its electricity needs at peak capacity.

Silicon Ranch also said this its first international solar project and the first large-scale solar facility built in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. According to the company, it can provide a blueprint for other energy and chemical companies to develop similar projects for supporting their operations.

Silicon Ranch will own, operate and maintain the solar array.

The Tennessee-based company says it has a portfolio of over 6 GW of solar and battery storage projects that are contracted, under construction, or in operation across the US and Canada.
