Independent power producer Silicon Ranch will build a further 720 MW of solar projects in Georgia and Tennessee to serve the data centres of Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:META), it was announced today.

Partnering with Walton Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Silicon Ranch will fund, construct, own, operate and maintain the seven solar projects.

The two electric utilities recently signed contracts with the solar developer on behalf of Meta for three projects totalling 560 MW in Georgia and four projects totalling 160 MW in Tennessee. The latter will be delivered in 2024 and will support Meta’s operations in Tennessee and Alabama. The Georgia projects will be completed over the next three years.

The new solar capacity will help Meta to continue to support its global operations with 100% renewable energy. Meta was ranked as the leading corporate solar user in the US in a recent report by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA).

The newly announced projects mean Meta and Silicon Ranch are now partnering on 16 solar parks, representing about 1,500 MW of capacity, to supply Meta’s operations in Georgia and the Tennessee Valley. Eight of these projects, totalling 630 MW, are in operation.

Silicon Ranch said all of the solar farms combine renewable energy generation with regenerative agriculture practices.
