Ireland-based clean energy developer Simply Blue Group on Friday unveiled plans to create a sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) hub in Nova Scotia, Canada, at a site previously proposed to host a liquefied natural gas project.

As part of its expansion in the North American market, the company has secured roughly 755 acres (305.5 ha) of contiguous land in the town of Goldboro to become home to the SAF complex. Under the plan, the site will be connected to a dedicated transmission line that will ensure the supply of green electricity coming from SImply Blue’s wind and solar parks in the Municipality of the District of St Mary’s.

The SAF complex, which is to leverage Nova Scotia’s sustainable biomass and water resources, is expected to have an annual output of roughly 150,000 tonnes.

“We’re pleased to see Simply Blue Group investing in this budding new industry in Nova Scotia. They’re going to make a big difference in the transportation sector with aviation and marine fuel,” said Tory Rushton, Nova Scotia’s Minister of Natural Resources and Renewables.

Simply Blue entered the SAF market in March when it announced work was underway on three projects in Canada, Ireland and Australia to potentially produce over 300,000 tonnes of SAF per year. It then said the Canadian scheme is expected to reach the construction stage in 2026.
