Sembcorp Industries Ltd (SGX:U96) unveiled today it is considering a wholly-owned unit’s participation in the development of offshore wind projects in Vietnam for the purpose of exporting electricity to Singapore.

The Singapore-based energy and urban development company said that Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd (SCU) and Petrovietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC), a member of Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, are jointly exploring this opportunity.

PTSC is currently the only company to have obtained a permit from Vietnam’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to undertake wind, marine and geological surveys.

The two firms have received a letter of intent from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) and will collaborate on securing conditional approval from EMA for the project, which is expected to span some 200,000 hectares of sea area across two sites off the shores of South Vietnam.
