Germany-based wave energy company SINN Power is initiating a feasibility study for its first commercial project on Cape Verde after it signed an agreement with aquaculture firm Fazenda de Camarao.

SINN said last week that its local partner aims to use 100% renewable energy for an organic shrimp farm on Sao Vicente. In addition to wave energy, it will also use a solar power system.

In the coming months, SINN Power will start gathering local wave data and preparing a wave profile and other analyses. Once the production of sea food is fully established, the company will measure the energy needs of the shrimp farm in order to create a model for a customised off-grid system. This will include a SINN Power wave energy converter array.

“If 10% of the energy needs of Cape Verde are covered by our innovative technology, we could reduce the yearly carbon footprint by 37,000 tons,” said SINN chief executive Philipp Sinn. Currently, the African island relies on diesel generators for power.
