Sinohydro, CGC hand over 153-MW Adama wind park in Ethiopia

Chinese firm Sinohydro Corp Ltd, part of PowerChina (SHA:601669), said Thursday it has officially handed over the 153-MW Adama II wind farm in Ethiopia to local utility Ethiopian Electric Power Corp (EEPCO).

The turnkey project was carried out by the company’s joint venture (JV) with Chinese state-owned enterprise CGC Overseas Construction Group (CGCOC). The wind power plant is equipped with 102 units of 1.5-MW turbines, supplied by Chinese construction machinery maker Sany Heavy Industry Co.

The wind output will help offset the power deficit in the region, as hydropower generation has been declining due to unfavorable weather conditions for some time now.

The Adama I wind farm, with a capacity of 51 MW, was completed in 2012.

The phase II project falls under the “Going Out” policy of the Asian country, which urges local companies to take advantage of attractive investment and growth opportunities abroad. The financing and technology for the Ethiopian park came from China.
