China Petroleum and Chemical Corp (HKG:0386), or Sinopec, today announced the start of operation of its green hydrogen pilot project in Kuqa City in China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Described by the company as the world’s largest solar-to-hydrogen project, the installation is capable of producing 20,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.

Besides a photovoltaic (PV) power complex and electrolysis facilities, the pilot project features facilities for hydrogen storage and transportation, with capacities of 210,000 cubic metres and 28,000 cubic metres per hour, respectively.

The project supplies hydrogen to Sinopec's Tahe Refining and Chemical.

Sinopec started construction of the CNY-3-billion (USD 414m/EUR 380m) pilot initiative in November 2021.

Earlier this year, the company launched the Inner Mongolia Erdos Wind-Solar Green Hydrogen Project.
