Sweden-based global construction company Skanska AB (STO:SKA-B) has been awarded a USD-861-million (EUR 803m) contract to turn the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) in New York into an offshore wind port.

The port will support the 810-MW Empire Wind 1 project currently being developed by Equinor ASA (OSE:EQNR). The transformed terminal will facilitate the reception, storage and pre-assembly of offshore wind turbine components and will serve as the operational and maintenance hub for the wind farm. It will also act as the point of interconnection for integrating Empire Wind 1’s power into New York's electricity grid at the Gowanus Substation in Brooklyn. SBMT is intended to be a scalable hub for the East Coast offshore wind market, including as a port for upcoming offshore wind developments.

Announcing the contract on Friday, Skanksa said its work on the transformation of the 73-acre marine terminal will include the demolition of existing buildings, ground improvements to support the staging of the wind turbine components, installation of underground utilities, and upgrades to site lighting, security, and safety systems, and the installation of two new heavy-lift crane pads. The company will also carry out significant waterfront and marine upgrades, including dredging of new and existing berths, bulkhead upgrades and installation of new wharf and dock facilities. The contract further covers the construction of a new 85,000-square foot (7,905 sq m) operations and maintenance building.

Equinor and its then partner BP Plc unveiled an agreement to convert the marine terminal into an offshore wind port facility in 2022.
