German developer Skyborn Renewables said it has initiated environmental studies at the site of its Pooki project in the Finnish territorial waters of the Bothnian Sea, where it proposes to install up to 2,600 MW of offshore wind power capacity.

Investigation began with the studies of bird flight paths, which will be followed by seabed acoustic surveys due to start this summer. The data will be compared with previous studies in the area and will be used to support the future environmental impact assessment (EIA) process and monitoring, said Otso Lintinen, Project Manager at Skyborn Renewables Finland.

The Pooki offshore wind farm is planned be located off the Bothnian Bay cities of Oulu, Ii, Simo and Kemi. Skyborn is considering the installation of around 85 to 185 wind turbines with a maximum height of 390 metres.

Last year, Skyborn signed a five-year reservation agreement with Finnish state-owned enterprise Metsahallitus, securing exclusive rights to develop the Pooki wind farm.

The company will submit zoning initiatives for the master plan in 2024. The legally required EIA procedure will also be launched in the same year.

Skyborn expects the project to be completed in the early 2030s.
