Steel fabricator Smulders on Tuesday said it has secured a contract for both offshore substations for the Baltyk 2 and Baltyk 3 offshore wind projects in the Polish Baltic Sea that are being developed by Polish power utility Polenergia SA (WSE:PEP) and Norway's Equinor ASA (OSE:EQNR).

Smulders has been awarded the design, procurement and construction for the substations, including jacket foundations. In consortium with Sif Holding NV, it was also contracted to produce the 100 transition pieces.

Baltyk 2 and Baltyk 3 will each have 720 MW of capacity, or 1,440 MW together. It was recently announced that the projects have secured the full set of offshore and onshore construction permits.

Smulders will be in charge of the engineering, procurement, construction, testing and commissioning of the topsides and the jackets for the offshore substations. These tasks will be carried out at Smulders’ production facilities in Belgium, with the final assembly of the topsides at the Smulders yard in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. The scope excludes high voltage and medium voltage systems, which will be provided by Equinor subcontractor. Hitachi Energy was previously selected to provide electrical systems infrastructure for the projects.

Smulders and Sif will partner on the provision of the transition pieces. Sif will manufacture the primary steel tubulars, including flanges, at its facility in Roermond, the Netherlands. Smulders will manage the secondary steel scope, coating, electrical system and testing and commissioning. The secondary steel scope will be produced by the company’s Polish facilities, while final assembly will be carried out at the yard in Hoboken, Belgium.
