Irish-American paper-based packaging expert Smurfit Westrock Plc (NYSE:SW) has signed its first power purchase agreement (PPA) for renewable energy in Argentina, securing 22 GWh of solar power per year for its manufacturing facility in the country.

The company has selected Argentine solar energy promoter 360Energy as its provider, it said in a press release on Tuesday. The contracted power will be sourced from the 360Energy La Rioja Solar Complex, which will reach 122 MW of installed capacity once all of its pieces go online.

The delivery of International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) is included in the PPA.

The procurement will cover a large portion of the annual energy consumption of Smurfit Westrock's Bernal site in Buenos Aires province, where the company manufactures paper from post-consumer fibres for use in corrugated cardboard packaging production, the press release stated.
