Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC) and renewables developer Emerge have begun the construction of a 60 MWp solar project in Sharjah, the UAE, which is touted as the largest solar PV plant in the emirate.

The solar park will be located at SNOC's Sajaa Gas Complex, Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and EDF, said on Monday. The clean electricity from the plant is expected to offset 66,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

Emerge's chairman and Masdar COO, Abdulaziz Alobaidli, SNOC’s CEO, Hatem Al-Mosa, and Emerge's Board Director and EDF Middle East’s Deputy CEO, Aurelien Delahaye, attended the project's groundbreaking ceremony.

The project supports SNOC's decarbonisation efforts and UAE's Net-Zero 2050 strategy, Emerge noted.

Solar energy is expanding rapidly in the UAE but the large-scale projects are concentrated in the largest emirate of Abu Dhabi as well as Dubai.
