Jordan Green agrees land deal for solar-powered green ammonia hub
Sep 20, 2024 5:52 CESTJul 5, 2012 - Canada-based renewable energy technologies firm Solamon Energy Corp (FRA:SSL) said Thursday that it has embarked on a campaign to sell large-scale solar arrays in Mauritius as part of efforts to enter the wider African market.
Mauritius, which is heavily dependent on fossil fuel imports, has a daily electricity consumption of some 350 MWh. A government-sponsored initiative to encourage the population to start generating electricity from renewable sources has been underway since December 2010. Upon announcing the initiative, energy and public utilities minister Rashid Beebeejaun said that the government's goal was to reduce considerably greenhouse gas emissions and boost the country's energy independence.
The Central Electricity Board (CEB) estimates that the island nation will needs some 400 MWh of electricity per day by 2025 and sets a goal of covering 60% of its power needs with renewable sources.
Apart from its regular offer of ground-mounted solar arrays of integrated photovoltaic cells, Solamon Energy is also offering -- in partnership with local companies -- roof-mounted and parking lot systems that can be enhanced with a micro wind turbine technology.
