Solar cell start-up Cosmos Innovation raises USD 19.7m in funding Perovskite solar cell, Oxford University

Singapore-based Cosmos Innovation, a start-up focused on AI-powered perovskite silicon tandem (PST) solar cell technology, has exited from stealth, raising USD 19.7 million (EUR 18.6m) in total funding to support its platform.

Cosmos Innovation uses AI to facilitate and speed up the creation of the design as well as the testing of PST solar cells. It is seeking to establish a self-learning fab with a focus on the solar and semiconductor sectors. The company’s newly launched platform, Mobius, discovers the proper combination of materials, processes and architectures of the cells.

“Our proprietary AI system, Mobius, has shown it can accelerate process optimization by up to 10x. It does this by intelligently proposing the next set of materials and process conditions to run,” CTO and co-founder Joel Li said.

The Series A funding round was led by Xora Innovation, the early-stage deep tech investment platform of Temasek. Other backers included Two Sigma Ventures, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, MIT professor Tomaso Poggio, natural language processing (NLP) researcher Richard Socher and Western Technology Investments. Innovation Endeavors, which led the seed round, also participated.
