GlassPoint Solar Inc believes it would find good use for its solar enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technology in Kuwait, which is seen as a very important market for the firm’s future business, according to an official.

With solar power the country will be able to produce four times more steam than with fuel, so that it could develop its oil fields, Daniel Palmer, vice president of sales, told Kuwait Times on the sidelines of an exhibition.

The California-based company will soon start building a 1-GW solar thermal park in Oman to produce steam for EOR. The project was developed in partnership with Petroleum Development Oman, a joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Total SA and the government. GlassPoint expects to begin steam generation from the first glasshouse module in 2017. Upon completion, the solar thermal plant will help save 5.6 trillion btu (British thermal units) of natural gas annually.
