Germany connected to the grid new solar systems with a combined capacity of about 790.4 MW in August, which is about half the level of the 1,470 MW commissioned in July.

Including the new installations, the total solar capacity in operation across the country increased to 93.03 GW, according to data from the Federal Network Agency.

In the first eight months of 2024, Germany built new solar facilities with a combined capacity of 10,180 MW. Once again, Bayer took the leading position with fresh capacities of 2,444 MW. It was followed by North Rhine-Westphalia with 1,420 MW, Baden-Wuerttemberg with 1,409 MW and Lower Saxony with 1,064 MW.

In August, 85.2 MW of the newly commissioned solar capacities were subsidy-free, consisting of 76.4 MW of ground-mounted installations and 8.8 MW of rooftop facilities. Subsidised systems included 175.5 MW of ground-mounted facilities and 545.1 MW of rooftop installations.

The fresh data also showed a slowdown in newly-built onshore wind capacity, which fell to 151 MW in August from 220.2 MW in July. With the facilities, Germany’s gross onshore wind capacity in operation reached 62.3 GW, with 29,643 wind turbines.

In August, new onshore wind projects with a combined capacity of 640.7 MW received development permissions after 841 MW in July. Projects approved in the first eight months of 2024 had a total capacity of 7,116 MW.

The table provides more details about new solar and wind installations in Germany in 2024:
