Solar power meets 2.8% of energy demand in Italy in 2011

Jan 16, 2012 - Solar power production covered 2.8% of the total electricity demand in Italy in 2011 which climbed 0.6% on the year to 332.3 billion kWh, a preliminary report of grid operator Terna showed.

According to the early data, 86.3% of the country's electricity demand last year was met by domestic production. Thermoelectric production covered 64.7% of the total, hydroelectric power met 14.3% of the needs, wind power covered 2.9% of the demand and 1.6% of it was produced by geothermal energy companies.

Compared to the previous year, net national production in Italy declined by 0.5% in 2011. Geothermal production rose 5.2%, wind power production increased 5.7% and solar power production soared 394%. Hydroelectric production went down 11.4% year-on-year in 2011 and thermal production fell 1.6% on the year, the report showed.
