Solar products shipments in Japan jump to 1 GW by end-2012

Feb 26, 2013 - The Japan Photovoltaic Energy Association (JPEA) said today that domestic trade in solar products had jumped to 1,003 MW in the quarter to December 31, 2012 from 406 MW in the same period of 2011.

The JPEA figures showed that imports of solar cells and modules more than tripled on the year to 342 MW, while exports plunged by 66% year-on-year to 111 MW.

The rise in solar products trade is due largely to Japan’s introduction of feed-in tariffs for renewable power in July 2012 as part of efforts to encourage investment in the diversification of its energy mix after the 2011 accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
