QatarEnergy unveils 2 GW solar project
Sep 02, 2024 10:55 CESTAug 19, 2014 - Solar power technologies could be a billion-dollar industry even in a country like Qatar that depends mainly on oil and gas, the general manager of Danish firm SolarDrive told the Gulf Times.
Kim Ahrenfeldt believes that the solar sector could bring investment of billions of dollars in Qatar, he said in an interview for the newspaper published on Sunday.
SolarDrive is a Denmark-based developer of solar rooftops for golf cars and utility vehicles. The company is the one that manufactured and installed the solar panels on the canopy of a newly-introduced airport service vehicle equipped with systems for "intelligent inspection" of the Hamad International Airport premises.
Ahrenfeldt noted that, while some of the car parts would still need to be imported, it is possible that the future assembly of more such vehicles could take place in Qatar. The patent for the smart car is owned by the Ministry of Interior.
According to the solar sector expert, solar technologies could be integrated also in local buildings, airports, amusement parks, hotels or even be used on shipping containers.
