Solarcentury Africa boards 100-MW solar project in Mozambique

Renewables developer Solarcentury Africa has joined Mozambique-based special purpose vehicle SunMoz to contribute to the development of an up to 100-MW (AC) solar power project in central Mozambique.

SunMoz was set up in 2019 by Mozambican investment firm Checunda Investimentos and the owners of UK-incorporated company Renewable Energy Services Africa (RESA) to promote the Chimuara solar park project in the south-east African nation.

In a press release last week, Solarcentury Africa said it had signed a joint development agreement with Checunda Investimentos and RESA to participate in the effort.

SunMoz secured over 250 hectares (618 acres) of land for the Chimuara scheme, which will be delivered in phases starting with some 30 MW (AC). Power from the solar farm will be uploaded to Mozambique’s grid, Solarcentury Africa added.

“We are very pleased to reinforce and expand our collaboration with RESA and their partner, Checunda Investimentos, to deliver the Chimuara project. The Chimuara Solar Park will be our second flagship renewable power plant in Mozambique, following our Balama Mine project which is currently under construction,” commented Jason De Carteret, Head of Solarcentury Africa.

Solarcentury Africa has been a part of independent energy trader BB Energy since early 2021.
