Renewables developer Solarcentury Africa and SolNam Energy Pty Ltd have received an updated generation licence from the Electricity Control Board (ECB) in Namibia to build the 60-MWp SolNam solar project in the southern part of the country, according to an announcement today.

The companies signed a joint development agreement in early 2023 to co-develop the merchant project, which has land secured close to the Kokerboom sub-station. The project has an environmental clearance certificate and aims to reach financial close this year. It will be mainly focused on supplying Namibian customers.

This will be Solarcentury Africa’s second merchant project in Namibia after the 20-MWp Gerus solar plant which is set to start construction in the coming months. The company, which is a member of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), seeks to become a leading power trader in Southern Africa by leveraging its solar development experience and the energy trading expertise of its parent company BB Energy. Solarcentury Africa has been a part of independent energy trader BB Energy since early 2021.

According to Solarcentury Africa, the merchant route provides opportunity to deliver new renewable power capacity quickly and cost effectively, thereby contributing to the energy transition and growing power needs of the region.
