UK solar company Solarcentury said on Tuesday it has won a EUR-5.7-million (USD 6.6m) contract to build two solar-powered mini-grids in Eritrea, East Africa.

As part of the deal, Solarcentury will design and construct the two mini-grids using solar photovoltaic (PV) panels and lithium batteries. They will generate electricity for the remote communities of Areza and Maidma, which currently do not benefit from grid power and are served by small diesel generators.

The project is financed by the EU, the state government and the United Nations Development Programme in Eritrea. The country’s Ministry of Energy and Mines will manage the project.

“It is hoped the project will be replicated in order to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change in Eritrea and provide access to reliable power 24/7,” said a representative of the energy ministry.
