SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ:SCTY) has installed a 2-MW solar array for Joseph Gallo Farms, a dairy, cheese-making and whey business based in California's San Joaquin Valley.

The maker of Joseph Farms Cheese said in a press statement on Wednesday that this is the largest privately-owned solar system ever installed on a California dairy. It now supplies renewable energy on-site for the family's dairy farm and, coupled with an existing methane digester, helps the business get closer to carbon neutrality.

"Our new solar array meets about half of our energy needs for our dairy and farming operations," said Peter Gallo, vice president of supply chain at Joseph Gallo Farms.

The fixed-array system consists of 7,840 solar panels capable of generating enough electricity to power 282 average homes a year.
