German solar module manufacturer CS Wismar GmbH, also known as Sonnenstromfabrik, will use the split cell and junction box technology of Norwegian sector company REC Solar Holdings AS to produce high-performance modules at its factory in Wismar as part of a strategic partnership.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed under which REC's patented technology will be applied to improve the efficiency of Sonnenstromfabrik's photovoltaic modules and optimise half-cut cell technology for passivated emitter and rear cell (PERC) modules. The use of the technology is expected to boost the yields even under partially shaded conditions, REC said on Tuesday.

With the partnership, the two companies will avoid any disputes concerning REC's patent on the technology. A final agreement with Sonnenstromfabrik could include a licence to the patent.

"REC’s patented split cell and junction box technology has currently become unavoidable due to solar cells getting larger. Cells must be cut to reduce currents to a level that can be handled by inverters," said Sonnenstromfabrik's managing director Bernhard Weilharter.

The MoU expands REC and Sonnenstromfabrik's existing partnership under which the Norwegian company has been supplying the German partner with wafers for several years.
