US packaging firm Sonoco Products Company (NYSE:SON) has agreed to procure 140 MW of electricity annually from a wind farm currently being built by the North American unit of French electric utility Engie SA (EPA:ENGI) in Crockett County, Texas.

The parties have signed a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with the contracted volume covering about 52% of the 270-MW plant’s expected output. It will come into force once the facility is launched in commercial operation, according to a press release published Monday.

The Big Sampson Wind Project, which marks the first renewable energy project for Sonoco, is currently scheduled to be wrapped up in late 2025. The site will be equipped with 60 turbines, each expected to have a capacity of 4.5 MW.

The VPPA with Engie represents around 48% of Sonoco’s US electricity consumption in 2025. It is set to reduce the packaging firm’s baseline carbon emissions by around 14%, supporting its strategy to cut global Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 25% by 2030.
