Spain produces 52.6% of its power from renewables in Aug

Spain’s renewables generated 12,341 GWh of electricity in August, 13.6% more than in the same month in 2023, according to early estimates by Spanish power grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE).

The renewables share in the monthly power mix was 52.6%, down from 55.3% as estimated for July.

The largest share of the mix belonged to solar photovoltaic technology for the fourth consecutive month. These power plants produced 5,400 GWh in August, up 20.8% year-on-year, reaching a share of 23%, REE said.

The next two highest power producers were nuclear power plants, with a 21.7% share, and wind farms, generating 16.6% of Spain’s electricity, according to REE’s provisional data.

National electricity demand was estimated to be 22,347 GWh gross in August, increasing by 3.1% year-on-year. After adjusting for temperature and working hours, national electricity demand rose by 3.8% compared to the year-ago period.
