Renewables accounted for 52.1% of Spain’s electricity production in January, generating a total of 12,202 GWh, according to provisional figures released by Spanish power grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) on Friday.

Wind farms remained the leading source of electricity production for the fourth consecutive month, contributing 24.6%, or 5,755 GWh, of the total.

Hydroelectric plants generated 17.4% (4,084 GWh) of the total, benefiting from rainfall in parts of mainland Spain, REE said. The share of solar photovoltaic power was 8.1% in January.

In December, the overall renewables share was 54.6%.

REE’s estimates for major power production technologies in January are presented in the table:

Technology: Estimated generation in GWh: y/y change: Share in January:
Wind 5,755 -22.8% 24.6%
Hydro 4,084 5.8% 17.4%
Solar PV 1,894 8.6% 8.1%
Solar CSP 105 -12.0% 0.4%
Renewable waste 70 2.2% 0.3%
Other renewables 292 0.3% 1.2%
Nuclear 5,158 1.4% 22%
Cogeneration 1,688 39.4% 7.2%
Combined-cycle gas 3,262 20.4% 13.9%
Coal 270 -8.5% 1.2%

Gross national electricity demand in January was estimated at 22,185 GWh, up by 0.9% year-on-year. After adjusting for temperature and working hours, estimated demand increased by 1.1%.
