Spain’s renewable power production increased by 32.9% year-on-year in February, reaching 13,152 GWh, according to the latest estimates published by Spanish grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE).

The share of renewables in the total power production mix was 59.55% in February, compared to an estimated 52.1% the month before, thanks to the force of wind and increased rainfall, REE said.

REE’s provisional data put wind power production at 6,901 GWh, which was a 47.6% increase from February last year. This accounted for 31.2% of the total production, making wind farms Spain’s top producing technology for the fifth consecutive month, according to REE.

Hydroelectric plants saw a 31.6% increase in production due to recent rainfall, generating 3,242 GWh. Solar photovoltaic power production also increased by 16.2% from the previous year, generating 2,500 GWh, which represented 11.3% of the total production.

Overall, emission-free power production accounted for a record-breaking 81.4% of the total generation in Spain during the month, with a record share of 88.5% on February 10, the grid operator said.

A selection of data from REE’s provisional report are presented in the table below:

Technology: Estimated generation in GWh: year-on-year change: Share in February:
Wind 6,901 47.6% 31.2%
Hydro 3,242 31.6% 14.7%
Solar PV 2,500 16.2% 11.3%
Solar CSP 185 3.3% 0.8%
Renewable waste 60 -16.4% 0.3%
Other renewables 263 -26.5% 1.2%
Nuclear 4,512 -1.9% 20.4%
Cogeneration 1,394 -18.9% 6.3%
Combined-cycle gas 2,007 -54.1% 9.1%
Coal 208 -49.1% 0.9%

Spain’s gross demand for electricity was estimated at 20,058 GWh in February, declining by 1.8% year-on-year. After adjusting for temperature and working hours, estimated demand rose by 0.8%.
