Spanish engineering and construction firm TSK Group has won a KWD-116-million (USD 383.7m/EUR 342.8m) order to build a 50-MW solar park in Kuwait.

Agence France Presse said the contract has been signed today. The solar project will be one of the first to be realised in support of Kuwait’s renewable energy targets.

The solar farm will be built in Shagaya desert zone and is planned to start power generation in December 2017, Salem al-Hajraf, the energy research head at the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, was cited as saying.

Kuwait aims to have 4,500 MW of solar and wind power capacity by 2030, electricity minister Ahmad al-Jassar told reported, as cited by the news agency. The first few renewable energy projects in Kuwait are being financed by the government, but the new ones will be developed under the build-operate-transfer model.

By 2025, the country targets to have 2,000 MW of renewable power plants, according to Hajraf.
