Eranovum, Israeli partners bring online 83-MW solar park in Spain
Sep 19, 2024 5:52 CESTSpain’s Balearic island of Menorca will invest close to EUR 24 million (USD 26.2m) in energy transition infrastructure between 2024 and 2027 to add more solar power, energy storage and electric vehicle (EV) charging points.
The Menorca Island Council said on Monday it would invest EUR 19.7 million to set up the projects in all of the island’s municipalities, an amount comes on top of the EUR 3.99 million that the Balearic government earmarked for the island for the 2024-2026 planning period.
The Mediterranean island’s authority will use the funds to install over 9 MWp of solar canopies and rooftop solar panels on public buildings and create local energy communities, adding new capacity to the 4.5 MWp already installed.
The Island Council also plans to add 18 MWh of battery energy storage to be able to manage and store renewable energy. The batteries, currently less developed on the island, will be paired with new and existing publicly owned generation and self-consumption facilities.
The investment plan also foresees the expansion of the EV charging network to support the growing number of EVs on the island.
“With these actions, in 2027 the urban generation will have exceeded the 30 MW initially planned for 2030,” said Simon Gornes, Councillor for the environment, biosphere reserve, and cooperation of the Island Council of Menorca.
